Praise for “Secrets of War”:

“The two decades of horrors against tens of thousands of children in Northern Uganda constitute one of the worst series of atrocities of our generation. I could not believe what I heard and what I saw when I came as a United Nations envoy in 2003. It was the biggest forgotten humanitarian crisis of our time and age. It was total war against children that was going on for thousands of days and nights of unspeakable terror – and nobody stopped it. Only through the testimony of the children themselves can we start to grasp what really happened. ‘Secrets of War’ provide us with the drawings and direct accounts of the surviving children. We cannot forget what happened and cannot now avoid fulfilling the hopes of the children for a better future. That is why this book is so important.”

Jan Egeland,
Former United Nations Under Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs (2003-06)
Europe Director for Human Rights Watch

Secrets of War is a collection of original stories and drawings by students in northern Uganda which document their personal experiences as child soldiers and victims during a brutal 22 year civil war. Many of the authors and artists were kidnapped to serve as soldiers in Joseph Kony’s rebel army which continues to wage its war of terror across Africa.

The children’s art is extraordinary in its detail and in the power of the imagery. The stories have been retyped for ease of reading with the original manuscripts also visible. Together they vividly portray a beautiful country and a peaceful people as they are overcome by a growing threat of violence and captivity that has left in its wake a generation of orphans and a region struggling to recover. They also tell of uncommon hope in their future and the power of forgiveness, without which their splintered communities could not heal.

Particularly violent material has been set apart at the end of the book to allow sensitive readers a choice about viewing it.
